The first official record of worship services was at Reinhart’s Schoolhouse in 1851.  In 1871, the Methodists decided to construct a church building.  A simple weatherboard structure was completed and dedicated on December 20, 1874. The Reverend A. A. P. Neal became the first pastor and had the honor of naming the church “Bethesda.”  In 1916, the building was remodeled, thanks to the labor of several families in the local community. “The church by the side of the road” honors those who served the church in its nearly 130 years of praising the Lord.

The Unionville Methodist Church, built on the site of the cemetery adjacent to the current Uvilla United Methodist Church, was built in 1856. During the Civil War and following the Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland in 1862, the Unionville Methodist Church served as a hospital for Confederate Soldiers.  It has been said that the name “Unionville” was changed to “Uvilla” out of fear of being falsely connected to the Union Army. Around the turn of the century, the church had become too small for its growing congregation. The church was dismantled and a larger edifice was built on a lot adjacent to the cemetery, the site of the current Uvilla United Methodist Church.

The Williams Memorial United Methodist Church had its beginnings in a camp meeting in the Aglionby Woods near Shenandoah Junction, West Virginia in August 1906.  Reverend T. C. Jones conducted the meeting.  Services were well attended from the start, and it was obvious that the village could support a church.

Mr. I. W. Williams and others  worked diligently to construct the church and continued to financially support the church’s programs.
